That was it, thanks! Adding AllowOverride AuthConfig to both directories
in /etc/lurker/apache.conf solved the problem.

I'm aware this is off-topic for this list, but I decided to ask here for
two reasons. One is that there are people on this list who have already
done that, and I don't have to explain everything about lurker,
especially since I'm not sure I know which details are relevant (in
particular, I was not sure whether apache honored .htaccess when
redirecting to a cgi script).

Another is following. I want that users from each group1 have access
only to archive1, and users from group2 have access only to archive2. I
have .htaccess files in /opt/ibr/var/www/lurker/archiveX, like this:

AuthType Basic
AuthName groupX
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/passwd
AuthGroupFile /etc/apache2/group
Require group groupX

Is this enough?
